When I think about the month of May, a few things come to mind—Mother’s Day, my best friend’s birthday, and the opening of Portland’s farmer’s markets. For those who aren’t familiar with PSU’s Market, I would suggest getting acquainted. Nestled into the beautiful Portland State University campus, the downtown market spans the tree-filled park blocks (and is a nice walk or short street car ride away from the deLuxe).

In addition to the fresh fruits & veggies, you’ll find Portland’s famed Pine State Biscuits serving up some ridiculously tasty biscuits and gravy creations, Unbound Pickling pedaling their freshly pickled delights, and Alma Chocolates tempting us with their decadent creations (and we give in)—and so much more. The market has nearly 150 vendors on its roster, which means you can indulge in anything from kimchi to farm-fresh flowers. Dig in!

Ciao,

Here at the deLuxe, we recognize that the recession hasn’t exactly been friendly to most wallets. We also know that thinner wallets needs not equate to the lack of a little fun and relaxation. This month, we’re offering a very budget-friendly deal—10% off our Best Available Rate when you book in advance. But wait, it gets better. Stay two nights and get 20% off, and even better, stay a third and get 25% off your stay!

Enjoy all the luxuries the deLuxe has to offer, and make your bank account happy at the same time. What will you do with the money you saved? Maybe head to Powell’s Books to indulge in a literary shopping-spree? Or perhaps you might prefer to hunker down at deLuxe, and enjoy a couple of cocktails and some gourmet local fare. The possibilities are endless.

See you around,

True story: a buddy and I headed downtown last week to check out a new hot spot. We drove around for over 20 minutes, looking for parking (unwilling to pay a garage—hey, it was after 7pm, when parking is free!). We finally threw up our hands—not literally, I was driving—and headed back across the river. When did our little town grow up? I guess we’re in the big leagues now.

Now I think you can appreciate how great a sweet parking deal at the Hotel deLuxe really is. Sure, other hotels offer free parking occasionally, but this one is for weekend stays. Knowing that you’ll have a place to stow your wheels, and not shelling out a penny to do it, makes a weekend away stress-free. Isn’t that what you were hoping for?

See you around,

Someone (a male comic, natch) once proclaimed that there is no such thing as a funny comedienne (and why, for heaven’s sake, is there a special word for a female comic?). He clearly had never seen what the fantastic Sarah Silverman has to offer. Here’s your chance: Silverman descends upon the Schnitz this month: April 7.

Best known for her eponymous TV program, which ran for three seasons, Ms. Silverman is also a singer (who can forget her charming duet with Matt Damon?) and published author—her autobiography, Bedwetter, openly shares her very personal struggles. On stage, nothing is off limits, and her thoughts on all subjects taboo—politics, religion, sex, and so much more—are often thought-provoking, sometimes shocking, frequently hilarious. Granted, the divinely inappropriate Big S. isn’t everyone’s cup of spiked tea, but I dare you to not laugh ‘til you cry.

Ciao,

Last week, a group of friends and I headed to the heart of the Pearl District to eat at this place we’d been meaning to try. Called Fenouil, you’ll know it by its huge picture windows that look out onto beautiful Jamison Square, the white stone fireplaces, and the twinkle lights that are laced through the trees outside. But you’ll remember it for the French-influenced Northwest cuisine inside.

We started with the Dungeness crab salad: lump crab with basil yogurt, greens, and blood orange segments. Sublime. Main courses got passed around like a bumping game of Catchphrase: the slow-roasted pork shoulder with smoked apple jus and the crispy duck leg confit were the winners. The sorbet trio with seasonal garnishes is the must-have dessert. I could go on and on, but I think you get the picture.

Ciao,

Spring is in the air, and good deals are as well. This month is a perfect time to take advantage of a really cool thing we’ve got going on at Hotel deLuxe, and all you have to do is be our guest. That’s right, the Be Our Guest deal is a great way to live luxuriously, while saving some serious do-re-mi. We’ll give you our best available rate for two nights, and bonus: stay with us for free on your third night.

You’ll want to celebrate the deal you scored, and a trip to the swanky Driftwood Room will certainly do the trick. Indulging in a signature cocktail, like the Tiramisu (did I mention that this sweet treat has Godiva white chocolate liqueur?) is a must, in my opinion. Could a stay at the deLuxe get any sweeter?

See you around,

Every place will be packed. But, you still want to take your honey out for Valentine’s Day, right? Well, this year, go that extra mile. Your girl will think you didn’t plan and you’re just heading downtown to roll the dice at finding a table somewhere, anywhere. But, instead of long lines and frustration, you pull up in front of the Hotel deLuxe.

You start with a signature cocktail in the Driftwood Room (the Hopeless Romantic seems a natural choice). Then step over to Gracie’s for dinner (because you’ve got that $100 credit included in your Valentine’s Day package). Now’s the real surprise: up to your swanky room, all decked out with roses, Pinot Noir, and Two Tarts Bakery double-chocolate chews. Throw in a $10 gift certificate to Cacao, and you’ve just won Guy of the Year honors. Or you could choose that wait-in-line-frustration option.

See you around,

Every New Year’s Eve, we get a big group of friends together, cover the dining room table with lots of newspaper, several bottles of good Oregon wine, bring out the pliers, seafood crackers, and sit down to a Dungeness crab feast. And at some point in the midst of the sweet gluttony, each one of us invariably exclaims, “This is my favorite meal ever!” Maybe we’re just drunk on the garlic butter (or Pinot Noir), but who can deny the unmatched fantasticness of PNW seafood?

So, you’d just be plain crazy to miss the Portland Seafood and Wine Festival. In addition to the afore-lovingly-mentioned crab, indulge in the Oyster Shuck and Swallow Contest, and sample myriad additional seafood offerings. With dozens of participating wineries (and a few breweries, too—hey, it’s Portland!), you certainly will not go thirsty, either. Live music, plenty of crafty booths—eat, drink, wear a bib!

It’s hard to believe that Martin Luther King, Jr., born in 1929, would be coming up on his 82nd birthday this year. Having died so young–just 39 when he was assassinated in April 1968–it’s daunting to imagine how much more he might have accomplished. It’s great to live in a city that knows how to shine a spotlight on what an amazing guy he was.

Starting first thing in the morning on January 18, you can join in on a rally, with our Mayor Sam Adams, at Concordia University; attend any number of singing and dancing celebrations at Portland public schools; help mark a new Habitat for Humanity complex dedicated to King; or march along with Pacific University’s students. And there’s a whole lot more. Hey, and don’t forget, all the parking meters are free, so get out there show your support.

See you around,
