Nothing says happy fourth like seared Dungeness crab cakes

Posted by Emily on July 2nd, 2008

The best advice I can give you in preparation for the upcoming celebration of our nation’s 232nd birthday is to remove yourself from the hysteria that is the waterfront. Remember, many of those folks discovered the beer tent much earlier in the day.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the blues festival as much as the next person. I just prefer to enjoy explosives from a safe distance. Like a table at the Portland City Grill. So there’s my Portland insider’s secret. Now it’s out in the open.

Call this instant and get a table facing the river. Believe me, once you’ve enjoyed the fireworks alongside a plate of shellfish risotto and a nice glass of pinot grigio, you’ll wonder why anyone ever opts for the sweaty mass of humanity down below. Yeah, America.

Enjoy,
Emily

Voodoo Doughnut post #2: Let’s have a doughnut parade!

Posted by Keith on June 13th, 2008

Hey doughnut lovers, I have an update on Voodoo Doughnuts. When I wrote my post the other week about them I didn’t know they were on their way to a new location. So sorry if you headed over to the spot on S.W. 3rd. Oops.

The worst part is I missed their doughnut parade from the downtown store to their new place at N.E. 15th and Davis! It’s not every day you see a doughnut parade.

Word is they tied up traffic on Burnside with the Regiment of Syncopated Drummers and I don’t know who and what all else. They must’ve looked like some kind of doughnut Mardi Gras celebration. I guess they even transported their secret doughnut grease in a coffin.

Anyway, I’m sure it’s new place, same doughnut deliciousness. But what about the Voodoo Wedding Chapel…?

Oregon may vote Obama, but we love our Clinton Street Theater

Posted by Keith on June 9th, 2008

I can’t believe you guys (other Hotel deLuxe bloggers) haven’t given a shout out to the tapioca in the Portland theater Hungry Man Meal at the Clinton Street Theater. It’s deliciously good. Like one of Voodoo Donuts’ Cap’n Crunch donuts.

The Clinton is your choice if you’re into more, let’s call it, unusual fare. The new Indiana Jones movie is never going to play there. Chronicles of Narnia is never going to play there. But a “Maximum Car-nage Double Feature” is (“Maximum Overdrive” and “Repo Man” July 11-17).

And there’s probably no better introduction to the theater than the upcoming Portland Underground Film Festival from June 12 to 15. These are not your mall movies. This year there are even a couple of openings and one world premiere.

I should also mention that the Clinton serves beer.

Cheers,
Keith

Let’s see a show of hands for renaming it the Cupcake Festival

Posted by Keith on May 30th, 2008

But do they have cupcakes? That’s my question. You say Rose Festival and I hear “cupcakes”. I blame Cupcake Jones. I stumbled into this place on NW 10th last Tuesday and have been three times since then!

Cupcake Jones

I mean, come on, the cupcake is the perfect dessert in the perfect size. It’s even made to travel, sitting in its own little crinkly jacket. And Cupcake Jones has a different special every day, as well as a bunch of other flavors. The strawberry rhubarb pie is not made by human hands.

So I say roses are fine to name a festival after. They’re nice to look at and all. But can you fill one with toasted coconut pastry cream or cover it with homemade caramel drizzle and eat it while walking down the street?

Taking chocolate to the next level of perfection at Cacao

Posted by Emily on May 21st, 2008

Cacao Portland

Have we not talked about Cacao? What kind of blog is this?! Cacao is, well, it’s like a corner of heaven melted off and dripped onto S.W. 13th. A chocolate corner, that is.

Because Cacao, as the name suggests, is all about chocolate. The shop offers an array of varieties from around the world, including the finest solid chocolate bars, special handmade chocolates, and the store’s own exclusive drinking and hot chocolates.

There is so much it’s hard to know where to start. Luckily the owners are very helpful, and know their way around a chocolate bar. They pointed me to a drinking chocolate with chili for that extra kick that was sublime.

Their beautiful shop also carries a range of chocolate-related accessories, including cookbooks, and even has a chocolate-scented perfume. Now that is going out smelling sweet.

Emily

This post now 50% bloggier! Don’t miss bonus post!

Posted by Keith on May 14th, 2008

In my fight against these tough economic times, I’m going to give you a two-fer post today. It’s true. And this is no Nigerian scam.

Item #1: Cool design, cool music, good food

If you’re looking for a great place to catch some live music, you’ve got to check out Doug Fir. This bar/lounge/restaurant is really a one-of-a-kind spot. The décor is sort of 50s modern meets fur trapper’s cabin. There are clever touches everywhere, including a great patio.

And they get top acts. Upcoming bands range from Clinic (May 18) to Foals (May 28) to the Detroit Cobras (June 16).

Voodoo Doughnut

Bonus item: Doughnuts!
A lot’s been written about Voodoo Doughnut, and it’s all true. Sample doughnuts on the menu? Dirty Snowball, the Arnold Palmer and the Memphis Mafia. I recommend the one with Cap’n Crunch and those ever-loving crunchberries on top.

Keith

We’re all wet in Portland and we seem to love it

Posted by Emily on April 23rd, 2008

Speaking of classy upgrades and posh VIP stuff. Or at the very least opportunities to drink. There are two events coming to the Pearl on May 2 that you should be aware of. The first, as Keith surely already knows, involves the opening of the Deschutes Brewery pub in the Pearl (NW Davis and 11th).

The second is a little thing we like to call the Portland Independent Wine Festival. The festival runs from till the 4th and gives you a great chance to taste the wines and meet the winemakers from more than 30 small craft wineries throughout Oregon.

It all makes me wonder about our fascination in these parts with the act of drinking. Coffee, beer, wine, distilled spirits, we don’t care. You’d think with as much rain as we get we’d favor a specialty in something dry, like crackers or Bundt cake.

Cheers,
Emily

Imagine wandering over to your favorite bar and finding it gone!

Posted by Keith on April 10th, 2008

I guess I need to get out more often. One of the first places friends took me to in Portland when I moved here was the Virginia Café. It’s just old school hipster cocktail lounge. They aren’t stingy with the pours and have a great happy hour.

The other thing is it was right downtown, but didn’t seem like a downtown place. And it wasn’t too expensive. Key for our group. Get the most for your moolah. So a couple of nights ago we head over and ― what?! ― the place is gone! It was heartbreaking.

Until we got wise. Worry not, VC fans, the place has dragged itself a bit further east to a new location over on 10th and Main. The new digs are now right across from the main library.

All’s well in liquorland.

In Portland we are committed to recycling in a BIG way…

Posted by Emily on April 4th, 2008

If you know Portland, you know that what is now called the Pearl District used to be an urban blight. It was a graveyard of old warehouses, vacant storefronts and overgrown lots.

What a difference a couple of years and can make. These days it’s a happening neighborhood with some of the city’s best stores and restaurants. Every once in awhile you get a glimpse of how it happened to work out that way.

The NeighborhoodNotes blog mentioned that the Centennial Mill, a century-old former flour mill and longtime waste of space, was destined for the wrecking ball. But here’s what I love about Portland: Apparently, the 12 buildings are going to be converted into a complex of restaurants, shops, entertainment and green space. Bravo, Portland.

So keep an eye on this spot along the Willamette on the northern edge of the Pearl.

Cheerio,
Emily

There’s more than 100 ways to lose your liver at Henry’s

Posted by Keith on March 13th, 2008

About this place Henry’s. If you haven’t been there you have to know they have more than 100 taps! It’s got to be the widest selection of beers in town. It’s like a forest of taps in there.

They separate out the different style on the menu for you, which is nice. From ales to lagers to stouts and whatever. There are even half a dozen fruit beers! And about 20 seasonals. Most from the west and NW. It’s like some kind of beervana in there.

Apparently it used to be the old Henry Weinhards brewery. It’s more of a pick-up sort of place than I usually go to. But man that selection… Oh, and get this, they even have a frozen strip on the bar to set your beer on to keep it cold! Beervana indeed.

Cheers,
Keith
