Here at the deLuxe, we recognize that the recession hasn’t exactly been friendly to most wallets. We also know that thinner wallets needs not equate to the lack of a little fun and relaxation. This month, we’re offering a very budget-friendly deal—10% off our Best Available Rate when you book in advance. But wait, it gets better. Stay two nights and get 20% off, and even better, stay a third and get 25% off your stay!

Enjoy all the luxuries the deLuxe has to offer, and make your bank account happy at the same time. What will you do with the money you saved? Maybe head to Powell’s Books to indulge in a literary shopping-spree? Or perhaps you might prefer to hunker down at deLuxe, and enjoy a couple of cocktails and some gourmet local fare. The possibilities are endless.

See you around,

Someone (a male comic, natch) once proclaimed that there is no such thing as a funny comedienne (and why, for heaven’s sake, is there a special word for a female comic?). He clearly had never seen what the fantastic Sarah Silverman has to offer. Here’s your chance: Silverman descends upon the Schnitz this month: April 7.

Best known for her eponymous TV program, which ran for three seasons, Ms. Silverman is also a singer (who can forget her charming duet with Matt Damon?) and published author—her autobiography, Bedwetter, openly shares her very personal struggles. On stage, nothing is off limits, and her thoughts on all subjects taboo—politics, religion, sex, and so much more—are often thought-provoking, sometimes shocking, frequently hilarious. Granted, the divinely inappropriate Big S. isn’t everyone’s cup of spiked tea, but I dare you to not laugh ‘til you cry.

Ciao,

Every New Year’s Eve, we get a big group of friends together, cover the dining room table with lots of newspaper, several bottles of good Oregon wine, bring out the pliers, seafood crackers, and sit down to a Dungeness crab feast. And at some point in the midst of the sweet gluttony, each one of us invariably exclaims, “This is my favorite meal ever!” Maybe we’re just drunk on the garlic butter (or Pinot Noir), but who can deny the unmatched fantasticness of PNW seafood?

So, you’d just be plain crazy to miss the Portland Seafood and Wine Festival. In addition to the afore-lovingly-mentioned crab, indulge in the Oyster Shuck and Swallow Contest, and sample myriad additional seafood offerings. With dozens of participating wineries (and a few breweries, too—hey, it’s Portland!), you certainly will not go thirsty, either. Live music, plenty of crafty booths—eat, drink, wear a bib!

Date: February 5 & 6, details >>

It’s hard to believe that Martin Luther King, Jr., born in 1929, would be coming up on his 82nd birthday this year. Having died so young–just 39 when he was assassinated in April 1968–it’s daunting to imagine how much more he might have accomplished. It’s great to live in a city that knows how to shine a spotlight on what an amazing guy he was.

Starting first thing in the morning on January 18, you can join in on a rally, with our Mayor Sam Adams, at Concordia University; attend any number of singing and dancing celebrations at Portland public schools; help mark a new Habitat for Humanity complex dedicated to King; or march along with Pacific University’s students. And there’s a whole lot more. Hey, and don’t forget, all the parking meters are free, so get out there show your support.

See you around,

I’ll admit it. I didn’t know there was such a thing as a tuba concert. A tuba concert playing Christmas songs. I didn’t even know you could fit 200 tuba players into Pioneer Square at one time. This I gotta see.

On December 11 at 1:30pm, you’re going to need to take a little break from your shopping frenzy, grab a hot chocolate from whichever of the many coffee shops you happen to be closest to, and set yourself down on those familiar brick steps. Next come the tubas. Maybe this is old hat to you, but I’m curious, amused, and somewhat afraid, all at the same time.

And I hear that, even with the great booming din, the audience is encouraged to sing along. Hmmm. I guess it’s easier than door-to-door caroling with a tuba.

See you there,

I like being able to tell people about quirky stuff happening in Portland. All you have to do is ask, and someone’s got a new, cool thing to check out. Free movies aren’t that unusual (or ones in unusual places like our rooftop flicks at the deLuxe during the summer), but watching a show while indulging in some of the best pastries Portland has to offer? That’s a sweet deal.

On Mondays at the North Williams Pix Patisserie location they will show some choice cinematic favorites. November offerings include Pleasantville (William H. Macy and Jeff Daniels—come on!), Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (offbeat, dark, and funny), The Bicycle Thief (the 1948 Italian classic, an Academy Award nominee), and one I haven’t seen, Rankin & Bass’s (the guys behind all those classic animated Christmas specials) The Last Unicorn. Check back and tell me what you thought of ‘em.

See you around,

Our hotel is kinda fancy. Kinda posh. If you think that means snooty, here’s one of the many ways we’re not: We welcome not only you, but also your furry best friend. A lot of guests are surprised to find out that we LOVE dogs at the deLuxe. We do charge a one-time pet fee, but it includes the use of a doggie bed and bowl and take-home toys.

Really want to go whole “dog”? Call Room Service and order off of the doggie menu. Fido’s craving Thanksgiving dinner with all the fixins’? We’ve got that. A Rainbow trout platter? Yep, that too. How about a doggie massage, or acupuncture, or photo shoot? We have all that and much more. And when you’re ready to hit the town, you may want to consider our doggie daycare. Nothing like ruffin’ it, is there?

Cheers,

When I was in high school, knowing nothing about the book, I was required to read The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. Expecting a Merchant Ivory-type, quaint, old-timey story, imagine my surprise. What an amazing novel: That’s the kind of feministic science fiction I can get behind. And then when I recently picked up Ursula Le Guin’s The Lathe of Heaven, I knew a bit more about what to expect (BTW, I would love for some of my dreams to alter reality).

So, how thrilled was I to hear that both of these amazing women will be speaking, together, as part of our great Portland Arts and Lectures series. Two brilliant, outspoken, original, award-winning minds, discussing their work with each other, with us as the lucky voyeurs. You can keep your baseball: This is the best double-header around.
