On the Set

Here’s to Portland’s best hotel lounge!

I realized another good side to not driving—I can stop in for a drink at the Driftwood Room before heading home. Genius.

Zach (who works in guest services at Hotel deLuxe) had told me that I had to try “The Coburn,” named after actor James Coburn (see Affliction [1997, Paul Schrader] but avoid Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit [1993, Bill Duke] at all costs). It’s got Canadian Club whiskey, orange Curacao and a dash of something called Fernet Branca(?).

Verdict? Great. I tried it a couple of times just to be sure.

Seeing as I should know the menu, in case a guest asks, I figured I really need to try all of the house cocktails (all named after Hollywood actors or characters). Next: “Brando’s Exile.” Ah, an offer I can’t refuse.

cheers,

Lance

Thank God for barkeeps like Terry . . . he pours good drinks (great ones if it’s your first) and recommends great food . . . especially if you don’t mind walking. I’m here for work (from the Bay Area) and he poured two (not one, but two) incredibly delectable French 75s (oh my) for my colleague. I recommend at least two. He then hooked us up with a great, quick tour of the Pearl district for more drinks and dinner. If you’re here for a day, or two, or for a week - make friends with the big guy at Driftwood slinging bottles . . .shaking shakers, pouring bubbbly, suds and vino . . . he’s the sh**, he knows it and that’s OK.

BG - thanks for the comment my good man! Yes, that Terry is a life saver. I’m pretty biased, but he has to be one of the best in the city. I bet he told you some great places in the Pearl District, I’ll have to blog about that sometime.

    cheers!
